Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain carbon fibers usable for reinforcing materials, having improved physical properties, without requiring surface treatment in use as the materials, by electricity conduction through organic polymer fibers carbonized and calcined at a high temperature in an inert atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Organic polymer fibers, e.g. polyacrylonitrile or pitch fibers, are made infusible, and heated at 800°C or above in an inert atmosphere with electricity conduction for 2W3 sec to give carbon fibers having good adhesiveness to the matrix resin and improved tensile strength scarcely causing ply separation without surface treatment.
