Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled porous material having uniform pore size and pore distribution and high mechanical strength, by filling a mold with carbonizable short fibers having self-bonding property, subjecting the fibers to self-bonding while keeping the form of fiber and carbonizing the fiber with heat. CONSTITUTION:Self-bondable and carbonizable short fibers such as pitch fiber or polyacrylonitrile fiber are filled in a mold having a proper shape and are subjected to self-bonding while keeping the fiber form to obtain an intermediate material having the form of paper, sheet, plate, etc. The intermediate material is carbonized by heating in an inert gas atmosphere (e.g., nitrogen gas) to obtain the objective porous material.
