Abstract

1415853 Coated products DUNLOP Ltd 5 Feb 1973 [12 Feb 1972] 6642/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C4] A preformed carbon or graphite friction element is protected from oxidation by coating the article with a mixture of at least one boron-containing material and a carbonisable organic material and carbonising the organic material at an elevated temperature to form a binder which holds the boron-containing material in position on the surface of the article. The carbonisable material may be in the form of a solution, suspension or dispersion and suitable compounds for the binder are phenolformaldehyde resins, in solution in acetone or alcohol, urea-formaldehyde resins, cold tar (pitch) and certain hydrocarbons. The boron-containing material may be boron, boron oxide, boron carbide and various borides of chromium, zirconium, tantalum, titanium, and tungsten. The carbonisation of the binder may be carried out by a heat treatment process or by the use of the element at an elevated temperature.
