Abstract

1,183,437. Carbon. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 8 July, 1968 [6 July, 1967], No. 32544./C8. Heading C1A. A process for forming a composite in which parapolyphenylene, with or without additional C and/or graphite is reinforced with fibres of B, Ta, Ti, W, Mo, compacted at a pressure between 1000 and 120,000 p.s.i. and then pyrolysed at a temperature of between 650‹ and 2500‹ C. Pyrolysis is carried out either under a partial vacuum or an inert atmosphere. Reinforcing materials may be in the form of fibres with a ratio of length to diameter of between 10 and 1000. Fibres can be randomly dispersed or can be aligned in the graphitic structure. The above reinforcing materials are satisfactory at temperatures of between 900‹ and 1400‹ C., however above this temperature range carburization weakens the fibres and therefore they may be coated with a carbon diffusion resistant metallic coating of preferably Re, Rh, Ir. After manufacture the composite can be machined.
