Abstract
1330519 Fibre reinforced carbon bodies FORDATH Ltd 22 Oct 1971 [22 Oct 1970] 50139/70 Addition to 1230970 Heading C1A An article comprising carbon fibres bonded by means of a carbon skeleton is obtained by a method in which (a) the carbon fibres are coated with a thermosetting resin in an amount of between 15% and 45% by wt. of the total wt. of resin and fibres; (b) the resin coated fibres are moulded to the required configuration under a moulding pressure in the range 100 to 2500 p.s.i. (c) the moulded material is heated to carbonize the resin and produce a porous structure (d) the moulded material is maintained at a temperature within the range 750‹ to 900‹ C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere containing a hydrocarbon vapour, the hydrocarbon being cracked at the temperature employed, the process being pursued for a period of time in the range 20 to 160 hours, so that carbon from the cracked hydrocarbon is deposited in the pores. The moulding pressure is preferably in the range 400-900, most preferably 400 to 600 p.s.i. The preferred carbonizing temperature is in the range 790-820‹ C., and the moulding may be heated in the presence of hydrocarbon vapour for a period of time of approximately 100 hours. The carbon fibres used may be aligned parallel to each other, or be arranged in superimposed layers the fibres in any one layer being substantially parallel to each other but being non-parallel in respect of fibres in another layer. Alternatively the fibres may be randomly orientated. The preferred resin is a phenol formaldehyde novolac, and a metal powder may be incorporated with the fibres and resin before the moulding step.
