Abstract

A shaped carbon article comprises carbonized cellulosic fibres Shaping may be effected before, during or after carbonizing. A filler may be incorporated in the article from a solution or vapour or as a solid. The filler may be uranium oxide. Carbon may be deposited on the fibres after carbonizing from vaporous benzene or during or after carbonizing from phenol-formaldehyde resin or furfuryl alcohol. The fibres may be first mixed with powdered phenol-formaldehyde resin or impregnated with furfuryl alcohol, carbonized and then subjected to deposition of carbon from benzene vapour. The article may be graphitized. The graphitized article may be further subjected to deposition of carbon from benzene vapour. A tube having an intermediate layer of higher density may be preformed before carbonizing by arranging a loose layer of cellulosic fibres between an inner rubber tube and a tube of loosely woven cellulosic material moistened with furfuryl alcohol and a second loose layer of cellulosic fibres between the tube of loosely woven cellulosic material and an outer rubber tube and applying hydrostatic pressure. Alternatively, rings of material woven to have an inner dense zone and impregnated with furfuryl alcohol or phenol-formaldehyde may be assembled on a former and heated under axial compression to effect polymerization. Compressed cotton wool may be carbonized in lamp black (Example 1), cotton wool may be compressed in a die during carbonizing (Example VI), a pack of cloth discs may be carbonized under mechanical pressure in an atmosphere of nitrogen (Example VII), rings of woven cellulosic yarn containing furfuryl alcohol (Example IX) or phenol-formaldehyde resin (Example X) may be stacked on a spindle and heated with slight axial pressure to form a consolidated tube before carbonization, a cylinder formed from alternate layers of discs comprising an inner portion of woven cellulosic material containing uranium oxide and an annular portion of similar but coarser material free from uranium oxide and discs of the coarser material free from uranium oxide may be carbonized under slight axial compression (Example III), pellets formed from cotton fibres containing uranium oxide surrounded by cotton fibres free from uranium oxide may be carbonized in lamp black (Example IV). An ungraphitized product may have a density of 1.58 g./c.c., a Young's Modulus of 3.41 X 106 p.s.i., a breaking stress in bending of 11.6 tons/sq. inch, a compressive strength in the direction of the fibres of 13.9 tons/sq. inch, a compressive strength perpendicular to the direction of the fibres of 19.5 tons/sq. inch, and a permeability of 2.12 X 10-8 cm.2/sec. A graphitized product may have a density of 1.65 g./c.c., a Young's Modulus of 1.96 X 106 p.s.i., a breaking stress in bending of 4.7 tons/sq inch, a compressive strength in the direction of the fibres of 6.1 tons/sq. inch, and a compressive strength perpendicular to the direction of the fibres of 8.1 tons/sq. inch.
