Abstract

1,214,355. Sintered fibre reinforced bodies. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. Feb.15, 1968 [Feb.24, 1967], No.7450/68. Heading C7D. In a method of producing sintered fibre reinforced metal bodies, filaments of SiC coated B are overcoated with a matrix metal such as Al, Mg or Ti on their alloys, the volume of overcoating being sufficient to provide the required matrix, and the coated filaments are compacted into the required form and then sintered or alternatively hot pressed. The filaments used have a diameter of 76À2 - 127 microns and a coating 2À54-5À08 microns thick of SiC. They are formed by deposition of B from BCl3 and H2 on to a tungsten wire. SiC is deposited from a gas mixture of methyldichlorosilane, H2 and methane. The matrix metal is deposited by plating, dipping or vapour coating and forms a minimum of 9À3% of the filament area on a cross-sectional basis. The filaments may be packed in a mould e.g. glass tube and compacted and sintered at e.g. 550‹ -600‹ C. using an Al matrix. Alternatively they may be wound on a mandrel prior to sintering. The density is controlled by varying the applied pressure and when maximum fibre fill is not needed supplementary matrix metal may be sprayed or infiltrated into the body.
