Abstract
A graphite member resistant to mechanical and thermal stock and to pressure is made by applying a fibrous, strip-form and/or granulated carbon or graphite material to the outer surface of a pyrolytic graphite member, applying a cokable cross-linkable resin to said material, enclosing the whole in a sleeve of refractory material, cross-linking the resin and then carbonizing it in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. Felts, threads or fabrics of carbon or graphite and certain granulated cokes may be applied. Suitable resins include phenolic resins, pitch-furfurol resin and furane resins. The sleeve, which may comprise two half-sleeves, may be composed of carbides such as tantalum, zirconium or tungsten carbide, refractory metals such as fluoturned or machined tungsten, pyro-alloys, carbon or polycrystalline graphite.
