Abstract

A shaped graphite article is produced by mixing comminuted carbon and a carbonizable binder material with at least one of titanium carbide, boron carbide, molybdenum carbide, niobium carbide, vanadium carbide, zirconium carbide, the carbide being present in at least 5% by wt. of the mixture; shaping the mix, baking to carbonize the binder, and graphitising in the presence of at least 4% by wt. of silicon carbide. Residual carbide may be removed by heating the article in the presence of a gaseous halogen. The carbides may be produced in situ in the article prior to graphitising and the silicon carbide may be added to the mixture prior to shaping, or it may be produced in situ during graphitisation. The total carbide content may be up to 20%, the ratio of silicon carbide to the other carbide being at least 0,8 to 1.ALSO:A shaped graphite article is produced by mixing comminuted carbon and a carbonisable binder material with at least one of titanium carbide, boron carbide, molybdenum carbide, miobium carbide, vanadium carbide, zirconium carbide, the carbide being present in at least 5% by weight of the mixture; shaping the mix, baking to carbonise the binder, and graphitising in the presence of at least 4% by weight of silicon carbide. The carbides may be produced in situ in the article prior to graphitising and the silicon carbide may be added to the mixture prior to shaping, or it may be produced in situ during graphitisation. The total carbide content may be up to 20%, the ratio of silicon carbide to the other carbide being at least 0,8 to 1.
