Abstract
A graphite artefact has about 50% of its open pores of size 5-10 m with substantially the remaining 50% less than 0.1 m , there being few pores of size 0.1-5 m . The artefact may have a viscous permeability constant below 3 x 10-11 cm.2 and a fission gas transmission coefficient below 10-6 cm.2/sec. The artefact is produced from a graphite grist whereof substantially all the particles are larger than 50 m . The grist is mixed with a binder, and the green mixture worked into a green artefact which is carbonized, impregnated with pitch, recarbonized and graphitized. The impregnating and baking steps may be repeated prior to graphitizing. The carbonizing steps may be carried out under pneumatic pressure. The preferred binder is a coal-tar pitch having a softening point of 90 DEG C., and may be present to the extent of 27-30 wt. per cent in the green mix. Preferred graphite starting grists have compositions by weight of 0-2% above 422 m , 43-48% between 422 and 251 m , 27-28% between 251 and 124 m , 15-17% between 124 and 70 m , 5-7% between 70 and 53 m , 0-7% below 53 m .
