Abstract

The porosity of a carbon article is reduced by incorporating in the article a resin formed by heat-treating a mixture of phenol and hexamethylene tetramine (hexamine), and subsequently heating the article, preferably to 350 DEG C. at a rate not exceeding 10 DEG C. per hour and then to 1000 DEG C. at a rate not exceeding 6 DEG C. per hour, to carbonize the resin. The article may be graphitized by further heat treatment. The resin may be incorporated by impregnation of the article, for example a self-cohering article of finely porous structure formed by baking a green mass of calcined pulverized coke mixed with a cokable binder such as coal tar pitch, with liquid resin, when preferably the molar ratio of phenol to hexamine in the liquid impregnant is 14 to 1 and the liquid is heated to form a stage 1 polymer before impregnation. Alternatively, the resin may be incorporated by binding a mass of loose particles of carbonaceous material of low volatile content, for example calcined pulverized coke, with the resin and forming the article either by extrusion when the resin binder is a liquid with a molar ratio of phenol to hexamine of 12 to 1 or by moulding when the resin binder is a solid with a molar ratio of phenol to hexamine of 6 to 1.
