Abstract

1,265,552. Shaped carbon articles. KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO K.K. 17 June, 1969 [17 June, 1968], No. 30522/69. Heading C1A. Shaped carbon articles are produced by (a) melt-spinning a pitch-like substance to form fibres; (b) rendering the fibres infusible by heating them (at least initially in an oxidizing atmosphere); (c) mixing the infusible pitch fibres with a carbonizable binder; (d) shaping the mixture to a desired shape; (e) heating the shaped article to carbonize it. Step (b) may be carried out up to 500‹ C. in, e.g. air with ozone, chlorine, bromine, SO 3 or nitrogen oxides, although this step (b) may be completed in an inert atmosphere. The mixture for shaping may comprise 1-85% infusible pitch fibres; and after carbonization (e), the article may be subsequently graphitized. Preferably pitches having more than 90% carbon content are used. In the examples the binders used were (1) a phenolformaldehyde resin, (2) a pulverized powder of calcined petroleum cokes, and coal pitch, (3) a pitch of softening point 120‹ C., and (4) the starting pitch.
