Abstract
1,225,726. Carbon filaments from coal-tar pitch. GREAT LAKES CARBON CORP. 8 May, 1969 [4 June, 1968], No. 23617/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] A process for producing filamentary carbon comprises melt-spinning a coal-tar pitch which is substantially free (less than 2%) of secondphase material (i.e. quinoline insolubles) and has a softening point in the range of 230‹ to 320‹ C., and converting the resulting pitch filaments into carbon filaments by controlled oxidation and carbonization. Before the pitch is melt-spun it should be preconditioned if necessary (see Division C5). The pitch should be spun at a temperature between its softening point and 350‹ C., and may be oxidized, carbonized and graphitized, e.g. oxidized in air for 60-120 hours at a temperature at least 10‹ C. below the softening point of the preconditioned pitch, followed by cooling, oxidizing and cooling rates being 3-10‹ C./hr. Carbonization and graphitization may be effected by heating at 700-2800‹ C. in an inert atmosphere, the heating rate not exceeding 10‹ C./hr. until the filament becomes substantially infusible.
