Abstract

1454629 Carbon fibres COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 3 Oct 1975 [26 Nov 1974] 51127/74 Heading C1A Carbon fibres, filaments or films are made by spinning or extruding a solution or extract of coal, treating the filamentary product in an atmosphere containing not more than 50% by volume chlorine, the balance being preferably air or oxygen, at a temperature at or above room temperature, concurrently with or prior to oxidation with oxygen or a gas containing free oxygen to form a filamentary product stabilized to heat-treatment, and carbonizing the stabilized product. Preferably the amount of chlorine present in the atmosphere is 1% or less by volume, an atmosphere containing 0À1 to 0À5% chlorine being suitable when treatment is effected continuously. Temperatures at or above 40‹ C. may be used for the chlorine treatment, especially temperatures above 100‹ C. Carbonization is suitably effected in a nitrogen atmosphere. In a typical example tows of fibre are treated in an atmosphere of 1% chlorine in oxygen at 165‹ C. for one minute, followed by heating in oxygen to 300‹ C., and carbonization in nitrogen at up to 1050‹ C. Treatment enhances the infusibility of the fibres and reduces fibre shrinkage.
