Abstract
1336123 Carbon fibres NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 16 Sept 1970 [16 Sept 1969] 45695/69 Heading C1A [Also in Division B5] As a precursor to carbonization and optional graphitization, synthetic resin fibres, e.g. of polyacrylonitrile, are subjected in a continuous process to stretching, e.g. to 2 x the original length, followed by oxidation at, e.g. 200- 275‹ C., whilst (a) preventing the fibres from shrinking and (b) preventing tension, generated by their tendency to shrink, from being transmitted back to the stretching stage. As described, a flat tow of crimped PAN fibres is spread out and drawn in the entry region of an oxidizing oven. The drawn yarn passes over rollers in the oven which rotate at the same speed as the outlet rollers, this speed being faster than the inlet speed. Frictional contact of the fibres on the rollers allows conditions (a) or (b) above to be met. The oven is resistance heated and has a fan for drawing in air as oxidant. Carbonization and graphitization may be effected in an induction heated cylindrical oven of graphite which is sealed at its ends by argon chambers. The carbonization furnace is purged with argon countercurrent to the fibres to remove decomposition products.
