Abstract

1284399 Carbon fibres COURTAULDS Ltd 26 Nov 1969 [27 Nov 1968] 56222/68 Heading C1A Carbon filaments are produced by heating polyacrylonitrile in air, other oxidizing or inert atmosphere at 200-300‹ C., and carbonizing in an inert atmosphere first at 1000-1100‹ C. and then at 1200-1700‹ C., the by-products of the final carbonization being carried away from the filaments by feeding inert gas counter-current to the filaments and withdrawing the gases so they do not contact the filaments outside the carbonization zone. Inert gas may also be fed from both ends of the carbonization zone. The carbonization may be carried out in an electrically heated tube provided with a branch pipe through which the gases are withdrawn; the branch pipe itself may also be heated.
