Abstract

1,245,123. Carbon fibres. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 11 July, 1969 [4 June, 1968], No. 26422/68. Heading C1A. A method of manufacturing carbon fibres comprises the steps of firstly heating a polymeric fibre in an inert atmosphere to 200- 300‹ C., secondly heating the fibre in an oxygen containing atmosphere at 150-250‹ C. and subsequently pyrolysing the fibre. The preferred conditions when using polyacrylonitrile fibre, are heating in nitrogen at 210‹ C. for 3 hours, 222‹ C. for 2 hours and 250‹ C. for 2 hours, heating in air at 220‹ C. for 7 hours and subsequently pyrolysing in a nitrogen atmosphere at 800-1500‹ C. After pyrolysing the fibre may be graphitized at a temperature up to 3500‹ C. Copolymers of polyacrylonitrile, rayon and nylon may also be used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 911,542.
