Abstract

1,166,251. Treatment of fibres. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 3 Oct., 1966 [2 July, 1965; 1 Nov., 1965; 25 March, 1966], Nos. 28108/65, 46091/65 and 13232/66. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C1] A carbonizable fibre is produced from an organic fibre of a type which melts or is destroyed if heated to a carbonizing temperature in an inert atmosphere, by heating the fibre in an atmosphere containing free oxygen to a temperature below its melting point or point of destruction whilst the fibre is held under tension and until the fibre is substantially completely permeated with oxygen. The fibres exemplified are those of polyamide, aromatic polyester, or polyvinyl alcohol fibres, and the tension applied to the fibres is preferably such that the fibre retains its initial pretreated length or elongates. The temperature of heating is preferably 100-250‹ C. and the duration of heating is at least such that the oxygen penetrates to the centre of each fibre. The atmosphere may be commercially pure oxygen. Carbon fibres may be obtained from the fibres so produced. For details see C1 Abridgment. The heat treatment of nylon in air and subsequent carbonization is exemplified.
