Abstract

1354880 Carbon fibre tows NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 23 Sept 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 45410/70 Heading C1A Continuous carbon fibre tow is made by applying tension substantially evenly to a continuous tow of carbonizable organic polymeric fibres during carbonization thereof in a furnace and applying the tension to the tow linearly over a length which is substantially greater than the length of the carbonizing zone in the furnace, e.g. at least 3 or 5 times. The organic polymeric fibres may be made from polyacrylonitrile or a copolymer containing a major proportion of acrylonitrile. The tow may contain 1,000,000 fibres. The tension applied is preferably 100 to 3,500 grams, for a 10,000 filament tow of 3 denier polyacrylonitrile. The tow may be treated with a solution of a resin and the solvent removed by evaporation.
