Abstract

1295289 Graphite fibres H M EZEKIEL 9 Dec 1969 [9 Dec 1968] 60123/69 Heading C1A Graphite fibres are obtained by treating polymeric fibre, which has been carbonized or stabilized by heat treatment, with elemental boron or a boron compound so as to distribute the latter through the fibre in an amount corresponding to 0À05 to 5À0% by weight of boron, then heating the fibre to 1800-3200‹C. in an inert atmosphere for a time sufficient to graphitize it. In a preferred embodiment a polyacrylonitrile yarn is heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at 275‹C. to stabilize it, impregnated with a boron compound such as boric oxide, boric acid or a metal meta-, tetra-, or pentaborate in a suitable solvent, dried, and rapidly heated under tension to the graphitization temperature. Other suitable polymeric fibres are made of acrylonitrile co-polymers, cellulosic materials, polybenzimidazoles, polyoxadiazoles, polythiadiazoles, poly(bisbenzimidazobenzophenanthrolines) and aromatic polyamides and polyimides.
