Abstract

RAPID THERMOSETTING OF CARBONACEOUS FIBERS PRODUCED FROM MESOPHASE PITCH An improved process for producing carbon fibers from pitch which has been transformed, in part, to a liquid crystal or so-called "mesophase" state. According to the process, the time required to thermoset carbonaceous fibers spun from such pitches can be substantially reduced by treating the fibers with an aqueous chlorine solution before they are processed by heating in an oxygen atmosphere. After the fibers have been thermoset, the infusible fibers are carbonized by heating in an inert atmosphere.
