Abstract
1496678 Carbon fibres from pitch UNION CARBIDE CORP 10 Dec 1974 [11 Dec 1973 (2)] 53251/74 Addition to 1416614 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] High modulus, high strength carbon fibres are produced by spinning carbonaceous fibres from a non-thixotropic carbonaceous meso-phase pitch, the pitch having a meso-phase content of from 40% to 90% by wt. prepared by passing through the pitch an inert gas at a rate of 0À5 scfh per pound of pitch while forming the meso-phase by heating the pitch in an inert atmosphere, thermosetting the fibres so produced by heating in an oxygencontaining atmosphere to render it infusible, and carbonizing the thermoset fibre by heating it in an inert atmosphere. Suitable meso-phase pitches are produced by heating to 350‹ to 450‹ C. while passing the inert gas through the pitch. Typical inert gases are N 2 , Ar, Xe, He or steam. Alternatively the meso-phase pitch is formed by subjecting the pitch to a pressure of less than 100 mm. Hg while heating. The fibres may be thermoset in air at from 250‹ to 400‹ C. (e.g. for 5 to 60 min. at from 275‹ to 350‹ C.). Carbonization in an inert atmosphere such as these listed above may be effected by heating the fibres in excess of 1000‹ C., typically from 1000‹ to 2000‹ C. for 0À5 to 25 mins. It is also preferred to pre-heat the fibres at 700‹ to 900‹ C. for say, 0À5 to 5 mins., prior to the final carbonization. The carbonized fibres may be further heat treated at from 2500‹ to 3300‹ C. in an inert atmosphere (e.g. as above) for 10 sec. to 5 mins. to graphitize the fibres.
