Abstract

PURPOSE: The carbonization tratment of fibers of polyacrylonitrile or others is conducted in two stages under specific conditions to produce high-strength and high- elasticity carbon fibers in short times.
CONSTITUTION: Flame-resistant fibers of 1.3W1.42 g/cm3 density prepared from acrylonitrile synthetic fibers by heat treatment are subjected to carbonization treatment under less than 25% elongation at 300W800°C in an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen. Consequently, the carbonization is completed at over 800°C in an intert atmosphere so that the length of the resulting fibers become not shorter than that of the flame-resistant fibers.
