Abstract

PURPOSE: Acrylic fiber is preheated at a temperature lower than that at which the fiber forms double-layered structure in the cross section in an oxidative atmosphere, subjected to flame-resisting treatment under specific conditions and carbonized in an inert atmosphere at a specific temperature to produce the objective high-performance carbon fiber continuously with reduced process stages in a shortened time.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylic fibers, e.g., of a copolymer containing 95% of acrylonitrile, are preliminarily heat treated in an oxidative atmosphere at a temperature lower than that at which the cross section of the fiber forms double-layered structure and further heat treated in a temperature range from the decomposition-starting point to plus-minus 20°C to form the flame-resisting fibers. Then, the fibers are carbonized by heat treating in an inert atmosphere at a temperature higher than 600°C, e.g., at 1,200°C for 2min to give the objective carbon fibers. The boundary temperature at which double-layered cross section structure is formed is about 255°C in acrylonitrile-methyl acrylate-methacrylic acid terpolymer.
