Abstract

1324041 Carbon and graphite fibres NIPPON CARBON KK 29 Oct 1970 [31 Oct 1969 (4)] 51552/70 Heading C1A Carbon fibres, which expression includes graphite fibres, having stated tensile strength and Young's modulus are obtained by drawing acrylic fibres, i.e. fibres derived from at least 85% acrylonitrile and up to 15% of other acrylic monomers, in a saturated steam bath having a temperature above 100‹ C. and below 160‹ C. to obtain acrylic fibres having a dry tensile strength of not less than 6À0 g./d. and an elongation of less than 15%; heat treating the acrylic fibres so obtained in an oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature of lower than 300‹ C. and carbonizing the resultant fibres in a non-oxidizing atmosphere by increasing the temperature from the stated oxidizing temperature to a temperature of 2000-3000‹ C. A preferred drawing temperature is between 100‹ C. and 130‹ C. and the heat treatment may be effected under a tension of not less than 40 mg./d. Before being treated by the process of the present invention the acrylic fibres may have been drawn to 3 to 30 times their original length, and during the process the fibres may be further drawn to 1 to 6 times their length.
