Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain carbon fibers having a high strength and elasticity with a high productivity, by heat-treating flameproofed acrylonitrile fibers under the conditions of specific temperature and heating rate, and subsequently treating the resultant fibers at a high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile fibers are heat-treated in an oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. air, at 200W350°C to give flameproofed fibers. The resultant flameproofed fibers are then heated at a carbonizing temperature of 300W800°C, preferably 400W 600°C, at a heating rate of 5W1,200°C/min, preferably 80W200°C/min, heat-treated at the upper limit temperature for 5W120sec, preferably 20W40sec, in an atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen, and subsequently heat-treated at 1,000W1,500°C in an inert atmosphere.
USE: A reinforcing material, heat-resistant material, chemical resistant material, etc.
