Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled fiber in high yield and at a high operating efficiency, by overlapping the ends of fibers, tying the ends with an ending piece having a good thermal conductivity, and heat-treating the resultant continuous fibers to facilitate the ending and eliminate the breaking at the knots.
CONSTITUTION: The ends of fibers or fiber bundles, e.g. a polyacrylonitrile fiber, are overlapped, and the overlapped part is ended by an ending piece 2, e.g. a wire net, having a good thermal conductivity. The ended fibers are then treated under temperature conditions of 180°C or above in an oxidizing atmosphere or 270°C or above in an inert gas atmosphere or 180°C or above in an oxidizing atmosphere and than 270°C or above in an inert gas atmosphere in a heating furnace continuously to give a flameproof fiber. The resultant flameproof fiber is further heat-treated to afford a carbonized fiber.
EFFECT: The good heat dissipation at the ended part in the heat-treating step will not cause cohesion and breaking of fibers.
