Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce cheaply and simply activated carbon fiber with superior flexibility and adsorbing power in a high yield by carbonizing vegetable fiber and by supporting zinc chloride on the resulting carbide followed by activation.
CONSTITUTION: Vegetable fiber is carbonized under an atmosphere of inert gas at about 250W450, esp. about 300W400°C for about 0.25W2, esp. about 0.5W1 hr. About 30W200, esp. about 50W150 pts. wt. of zinc chloride are supported on 100 pts. wt. of the resulting carbide by dipping the carbide in an about 5W60, esp. 10W 50 wt% soln. of zinc chloride. The zinc chloride-supported carbide is calcined under an atmosphere of inert gas such as N2 at about 350W750°C to produce desired activated carbon fiber. Prior to carbonizing vegetable fiber, by supporting one or more out of nitric acid, phosphoric acid, boric acid, etc. on the fiber the flexibility of the resulting carbide is further improved, and the carbonization yield is considerably raised.
