Abstract

1,241,937. Carbonised and graphitised fibres. MONSANTO CO. 5 Sept., 1969 [6 Sept., 1968], No. 44161/69. Heading C1A. A carbonized or graphitized fibre or fibrous web is prepared from (a) acrylonitrile or a copolymer of acrylonitrile with up to 15 mol. per cent of an α-monoethylenically unsaturated monomer; (b) natural or regenerated cellulose; or (c) an aromatic polyamide having repeating units with the general formula in which R and R<SP>1</SP> are hydrogen atoms or alkyl alkoxy groups with 1-3 carbon atoms or a nitro or phenyl group, all the substituents R<SP>1</SP> being alike, each X and Y is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1-3 carbon atoms or a phenyl group, and the phenylene groups are either meta or para phenylene groups, by heating at a temperature of 180-550‹ C. in an oxygen containing atmosphere to partially oxidize and blacken the fibres, followed by heating at 700-1200‹ C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to effect carbonization, and, when graphitization is desired, heating in a non- oxidizing atmosphere or vacuum at 1200- 3600‹ C., such that the final step at least is performed by means of a laser beam.
