Abstract

1286534 Carbon fibres ROLLS ROYCE Ltd 29 July 1970 [4 Aug 1969] 38869/69 Heading C1A [Also in Division D1] Carbon fibres are formed by pyrolysing a sheet of longitudinally aligned polyacrylonitrile fibres and subsequently dividing the sheet along the length of the fibres. The pyrolysis may be preceded by an oxidation step in which the fibres are heated in air to a temperature between 150‹ and 300‹ C. After pyrolysis the sheet of carbonized fibres may be impregnated with a resin, e.g. an epoxy novolac, which impregnation may be performed by transfer of resin from a resin coated release paper to the carbon fibres. The division of the sheet, which may be performed with a plurality of slitting wheels, preferably takes place after the resin impregnation, the release paper being divided along with the fibre sheet. If desired there may be two separate sets of slitting wheels to divide the sheet in successive stages. The slitting step may be performed as a continuous process with the carbonizing step or the carbon fibre sheet may be rolled up after pyrolysis and offered to a separate slitting machine. In this event as the pyrolysed sheets are wound they are preferably interleaved with a release paper.
