Abstract

1,248,507. Carbon articles by slurry casting. KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO K.K. 31 Jan., 1969 [31 Jan., 1968], No. 5316/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] Shaped carbon articles are produced by (a) preparing a slurry containing as the major or only carbonaceous starting material a modified pitch having a softening point above 170‹ C.; (b) forming the article by slurry casting; (c) drying; and (d) carbonizing in an inert gas. The article may be heated in an oxidizing atmosphere between steps (c) and (d) and/or graphitized after carbonization. The modified pitch is produced from coal-tar pitches, petroleum asphalts and other pitch-like substances, e.g. by-products of cracking petroleum, by heat-treating, i.e. dry distillation, extracting by solvent, or treatment with ozone, oxygen, air, oxides of nitrogen, halogens, sulphur or sulphur compounds.
