Abstract
Carbon or graphite filaments are produced by melt-spinning a pitch-like substance or a mixture of such substances, which contain C and H, having a C content from 91-95% and a mean M.W. of at least 400, treating the spun filament to render it infusible and then subjecting the treated filament to a carbonization or graphitization treatment. "Pitch-like substances" are defined as petroleum pitch, coal-tar pitch, natural asphalts and pitch-like industrial by-products. The method of determination of per cent C, and mean M.W. are defined. An additive may be incorporated prior to spinning, to improve the spinnability or for facilitating infusibilization of the spun filaments, e.g. an inorganic halide or peroxide. The infusibilization may be effected by heating in oxygen or ozone. Carbonization is effected in the absence of oxidizing media at up to 2000 DEG C. A pitch-like substance having the required per cent C and mean M.W. may be obtained by dry distillation of a pitch at 300-400 DEG C.
