Abstract
1,220,482. Shaped carbon articles. KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO K.K. 2 Feb., 1968 [3 Feb., 1967], No. 5348/68. Heading C1A. Shaped carbon articles are produced from a modified pitch (either of a single kind or a mixture of different kinds) which has an H: C atomic ratio of 0À2: 1 to 0À6: 1 and a softening point of at least 170 C., by moulding said pitch, carbonizing and graphitizing the product in an inert atmosphere. The moulded article may be oxidized prior to carbonization. The modified pitch may be produced from crude pitch, tar or asphalt by distillation in an inert atmosphere at 380-500 C., dry distillation at 380-430 C. while air is blown through, solvent extraction, or heating with a halogen, ozone and/or sulphur. The pitch may be in the form of a powder prior to moulding. The carbonization and graphitization may be carried out at a temperature rise rate of 5 C./minute.
