Abstract
1,236,015. Carbon articles. COURTAULDS Ltd. 14 Aug., 1968 [15 May, 1967], No. 22324/67. Heading C1A. Shaped, reinforced carbon articles are prepared by moulding a non-fibrous carbonaceous material, if necessary with a binder, with a reinforcement of carbon filaments substantially all of which are disposed in the same direction, and carbonizing the resulting composite. The carbonaceous material may be coal or coke in pulverized form. The moulding may be carried out at about 100‹ C., and carbonization effected at a temperature above 800‹ C. The moulded article may be supported during carbonization by a saggar, and be blanketed with powdered coke. It may be graphitized by a further treatment at a temperature of 2500-3000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere. The filaments are preferably arranged to be substantially continuous throughout the length of the article.
