Abstract

[Also in Division C5] A carbon aggregate is produced from a puffing petroleum coke by contacting the coke with a puffing inhibiting agent, e.g. iron oxide, then heating in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to a temperature of 1400‹ C. and above that at which the coke begins to puff in the absence of the inhibitor and cooling the product to below 200‹ C. A graphite body may be produced by mixing a carbonaceous filler comprised of at least 20% by weight of the cooled product described above with a carbonaceous binder such as pitch, shaping and then heating to at least 2000‹ C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. Carbon bodies may be prepared by heating the shaped article to a temperature sufficient to carbonize the binder, that is, at least 500‹ C.
