Abstract

1,215,374. Obtaining molybdenum. UGINE KUHLMANN. Jan.5, 1968 [Jan. 6, 1967], No.877/68. Heading C7D. A porous agglomerated product consisting of at least 80% by weight molybdenum and having a specific gravity at most equal to 5 is made by (1) mixing MoO 3 with a coking carbonaceous binder and optionally a solid carbonaceous reducing agent, and forming blanks with the mixture, (2) reducing the MoO 3 to MoO 2 at a temperature up to 600‹ C. under a reducing atmosphere, (3) reducing the MoO 2 to Mo at a temperature raised progressively to 1100‹-1300‹C. in a reducing atmosphere, and (4) cooling the product under an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen down to 200‹C. Suitable binders are pitch, asphalt, tar, molasses, phenol formaldehyde resin and furfural. Suitable reducing agents are graphite, charcoal and coke. The product may be used to add Mo to steel baths.
