Abstract

1,131,433. Coking coal. CONSOLIDATION COAL CO. 25 Feb., 1966 [3 March, 1965], No. 8406/66. Heading C5E. Coal of a predetermined size spectrum, e.g. 14-mesh Tyler, and less, and carbonized particles, e.g. char, are partially carbonized in a rotary retort and the agglomerates so formed are size-separated into two portions, one having a size spectrum, e.g. 2<SP>1</SP>/ 4 inches to # inch, different to the size spectrum of the initial coal, and being delivered to a calciner. The other portion is crushed to a size spectrum similar to that of the coal and is recycled to the retort. All the char delivered to the retort may consist of the recycled portion, or some may be provided by a low temperature carbonizer, preferably of the fluidized bed-type, supplied with a portion of the initial finelydivided coal. Pitch, produced, e.g. by condensing vapours from the carbonizer, retort and calciner, may be delivered to the retort, and if non- or weakly caking coal is used, a tar binder should be included.
