1312317 Spherical carbon material NITTETSU MINING CORP Ltd 30 April 1970 [30 April 1969 (2)] 20850/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] A spherical carbon material is manufactured by mixing and kneading a particulate carbonaceous material with a binder, crushing the mixture, preferably to less than 3 mm. particle size, granulating the crushed mixture with water at not less than 20‹ C., drying, and finally carbonizing in two stages of which in the first the temperature increase is less than 10‹ C. per minute until a temperature at which volatile matter is generated violently is reached, and in the second the temperature is increased to from 600‹ to 1200‹ C. The carbonaceous material is either coal or a material produced by the carbonization of coal or an organic material, preferably coal with a particle size of less than 100 mesh (Tyler Standard) mixed with 15-30% by weight of coke; the carbonaceous material may contain inorganic materials, other than carbon, in amounts up to 30% by weight of the spherical carbon material. The binder is preferably sulphite pulp spent liquor, carboxy methyl cellulose, fine crystal cellulose or waste molasses. Preferably the granulating water is at 20-50‹ C., the particle size of the crushed mixture is less than 3 mm, and the drying is effected at less than 80‹ C. until the water content is about 10% by weight of the product and then at above 80‹ C. to reduce the water content to less than 8% by weight of the product.
