Abstract

1421343 Treatment of municipal refuse BLACK CLAWSON FIBRECLAIM Inc 29 Nov 1972 [30 Nov 1971] 55154/72 Headings C1K and C1B [Also in Division C5] A particulate mixture is prepared by (1) depositing municipal refuse comprising relatively frangible and infrangible organic and inorganic solids and an aqueous medium in a treatment vessel, (2) using mechanical and hydraulic shear forces to produce particles, (3) screening the thus produced slurry, (4) removing relatively infrangible solids from the treatment vessel separately from the slurry, (5) removing from the slurry substantially all of the inorganic constituents thereof, (6) uniformly mixing the resulting slurry of organic solids in a mixing tank and (7) removing from the slurry sufficient of the aqueous medium to leave a particulate mixture comprising in highest proportion paper fibres and characterized by substantial uniformity of component materials, particle size distribution, moisture content and fuel value. The slurry from step (5) may be subjected to screening to remove paper fibres therefrom. Sewage sludge may be added to the slurry. The particulate mixture is suitable for use as a fuel, compost or landfill, or for manufacture of hardboard.
