Abstract

A method of treating heterogeneous, biologically degradable waste at least partially, such as household waste, comprising a substantial proportion of biologically degradable liquid and solid constituents, a method comprising the following steps: crushing such solid matter into relatively small particles and produce a suspension of said crushed solid materials and the liquid, by adding water and the mixing action of the constituents; homogenizing said suspension by the action of finely dividing said solid matters until forming a well homogenized suspension having a dry solid matter content of about 1% to 15% by weight, and preferably 5% to 10% by weight; shake said suspension and mix its constituents to a sufficient degree to prevent stratification or sedimentation of its solid constituents, said stirring and mixing being carried out under conditions that ensure a contact surface, between said suspension and an oxygen-rich gas, sufficient to satisfy the needs of oxygen from the aerobic microorganisms primitively present in the suspension and those produced in the course of treatment, and causing the temperature of the suspension to rise until it enters a range of thermophilic temperatures of around 5ºC to 7ºC in order to activate said microorganisms; and maintaining the temperature of the suspension within said temperature range under the mentioned conditions to satisfy the oxygen needs of said microorganisms, until at least most of all the biologically degradable material contained in the suspension has been used up, after which the suspension can be separated or divided substantially into a liquid fraction that cannot be objected from the sanitary point of view and nondegradable residual products that cannot be objected from the sanitary point of view either.
