Abstract

1476169 Treatment of raw aqueous waste NATIONAL AERONAUTICS & SPACE ADMINISTRATION 22 Aug 1974 [22 Aug 1973] 36973/74 Heading C1C A process for the treatment of raw aqueous liquid waste in which at least organic matter is dissolved and further including at least non- dissolved settleable matter comprises a process in which the incoming raw liquid waste is mixed with a partially used activated carbon and ash material to which organic matter, which has previously been dissolved in partially treated aqueous liquid waste, is adsorbed to facilitate the settling of the non-dissolved settleable matter in the liquid, the activated carbon and ash material and the settled non-dissolved settleable matter representing a sludge and slurry mixture are separated from most of the water in which at least organic matter remains dissolved, the separated sludge and slurry mixture is pyrolysed to form fresh activated carbon and ash material which is added to the water from which the sludge and slurry mixture has been separated, whereby the fresh activated carbon and ash material is partially used by adsorbing a substantial portion of the organic matter dissolved in the water and the partially used activated carbon and ash material to which the organic matter is adsorbed is separated from the water for subsequent mixing with the incoming raw aqueous liquid waste. Apparatus for treating the aqueous liquid is also described, and the treatment of raw sewage is exemplified.
