Abstract
1368806 Purifying waste water COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH 8 Feb 1972 [24 Feb 1971] 5333/71 Heading C1C A continuous process for treating waste water containing coagulable material, synthetic detergents and other dissolved organic substances comprises treating the water in (a) a coagulation/ sedimentation stage to produce a sludge containing the coagulable material, (b) an activated carbon adsorption stage to adsorb residual synthetic detergents and the dissolved organic substances and (c) a spent carbon separation stage to produce a spent carbon sludge, feeding at least a portion of the spent carbon sludge to step (a) and treating the water, if necessary, prior to (b) to reduce the synthetic detergents to a residual level (i.e. not greater than 1À5 mg./ 1.). The process may comprise an aerating stage and coagulation/flotation stage prior to (a), an ammonia stripping stage, a foam fractionating stage and a carbon dioxide treatment stage after (a), one or more flocculation stages and a sedimentation stage in (c) and sand filtering, chlorinating and activated carbon treatment stages after (c). Part of the sludge produced in (a) may be recycled to the coagulation/flotation or coagulation/sedimentation stage; part of the spent carbon sludge may be recycled to the spent carbon separation stage. The coagulants and flocculants may be lime, ferric sulphate, aluminium sulphate or polyelectrolytes. When excess lime is used, the carbon dioxide treatment produces calcium carbonate which acts as a weighting agent and aids the settling of the spent carbon sludge.
