Abstract

1461865 Aeration/flocculation of organicaqueous wastes DART INDUSTRIES Inc 4 Sept 1974 [5 Sept 1973] 38658/74 Heading C1C Aqueous liquid waste containing oxidizable organic impurities and suspended solid particles may be treated by a process comprising (a) . subjecting aerated aqueous liquid waste to biooxidation in the presence of suitable microorganisms, (b) allowing the oxidized waste to settle, (c) separating for disposal at least some of this sediment, (d) subjecting the liquid remaining after removal of sediment to a chemical treatment to cause aggregation (coagulation/ flocculation) of the suspended solid particles therein, and (e) separating the product from the chemical treatment in (d) into a solid comprising the aggregates produced thereby for combination with sediment from (b) and an aqueous liquid with substantially reduced content of oxidizable organic impurities and suspended solid particles. The biologically active sediment from the oxidized waste may be recycled to the bio-oxidation step (a). The aqueous waste may include effluent from a styrene-acrylonitrile, an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene or a styrene suspension polymerization process. Chemical treating agents may be e.g. aluminium sulphate, lime or iron sulphate.
