Abstract

1,264,452. Reducing iron oxide. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A. G. Jan. 9, 1970 [Feb. 28, 1969], No. 1261/70. Heading C7D. In a process for directly reducing iron oxidecontaining material with solid carbonaceous materials in a rotary kiln, the surplus carbonaceous material separated from the matter discharged from the kiln is treated to remove part of the ash, and pelletized by rolling with the additions of water and a binder, the resulting pellets being fed to the rotary kiln. The surplus carbonaceous material is preferably communicated before pelletizing either before or after the removal of ash. The material pelletized has preferably a size below 1 mm when discharged. The pellets may have a size up to 20 mm. Up to 40% water may be used and up to 15% binder for example tar, pitch, bentonite or boiler ash. In the example sponge iron is produced.
