Abstract

1,239,669. Activated coke. BERGWERKSVERBAND G.m.b.H. 2 May, 1969 [21 June, 1968], No. 22622/69. Heading B1L. [Also in Division Cl] Sulphur dioxide is removed from waste gases by passing them over an activated coke prepared by mixing a pulverulent non coking carbonaceous material, e.g. wood, coal, peat, coke, soft coal or oxidised coal, none of the particles of which exceed 0.1 mm in diameter, with 15-35% by weight of a carbonaceous binder, e.g. bitumen, tar or pitch, forming the mixture into shaped bodies, e.g. by pelleting or briquetting in a roller or extrusion press, carbonising the bodies at 500‹ to 900‹C, and activating the carbonised bodies with steam at a temperature of from 800 to 1000‹C until a loss in weight of the bodies of 10 to 30% is achieved. The non-coking carbonaceous material may be de-ashed and preferably the waste gases are passed over the activated bodies at 100‹ to 200‹ C. The passage of waste gas is stopped when degree of desulpherisation achieved by the bodies drops to a predetermined value e.g. 70%. The bodies are reactivated by scrubbing with water at 20‹ to 90‹C and drying.
