Abstract

A method of removing sulphur dioxide from waste gases comprises mixing a pulverulent non-coking carbonaceous material, none of the particles of which exceed 0.1 mm. in diameter with 15 to 35% by weight of a carbonaceous binder, forming the mixture into shapes, carbonizing the mixture at a temperature from 500 DEG to 900 DEG C. and passing the waste gases over the bodies so formed without further activation of the bodies. The binder may be bitumen, tar, or pitch, and the shaping may be by pellitizing or briquetting in a roller or extrusion press. The pulverulent material is preferably de-ashed. Coke dust produced in adsorption and desorption in desulphurization plants can be used as starting material or as a constituent of the starting material.ALSO:A method of removing sulphur dioxide from waste gases comprises mixing a pulverulent non-caking carbonaceous material, none of the particles of which exceed 0.1 mm. in diameter, with 15-35% by weight of a carbonaceous binder, forming the mixture into shapes, carbonizing the mixture at a temperature from 500 to 900 DEG C and passing the waste gases over the bodies so formed without further activation of the bodies.
