Abstract

1382475 Absorbent carbon CALGON CORP 4 April 1972 [7 April 1971] 15455/72 Heading C1A A carbon absorbent having molecular sieve properties is obtained by agglomerating pulverized coal, or a char derived from naturally occurring carbonaceous material with pitch, crushing the agglomerates, activating the granular material so obtained by heating in a stream of air at 300-400‹ C. for a period of at least 120 mins. and subsequently calcining at 850‹ to 960‹ C. for a period of 5-20 mins. and recovering the product. The product is said to have a surface area measured by I 2 absorption of at least 450 m.<SP>2</SP>/gm. and an average CCl 4 number of no greater than 2À0. The material may be contacted with air during the activating step. The absorbent may be used for separating gaseous mixtures, e.g. of hydrocarbons, when only molecules of given size and shapes are taken up by the absorbent. The absorbed gases may subsequently be regenerated. Suitable chars are given as coconut char, carbonized coal, lignite chars, petroleum acid sludge, nut shells and wood.
