Abstract

1335471 Carbon black COUNCIL OF SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH 28 July 1971 [30 July 1970 29 March 1971] 35494/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] Carbon black is produced from coal by grinding the coal through a 72 BS sieve such that 40% of it passes through a 200 BS sieve, and thereafter carbonizing the coal in a fluidized bed at a temperature of about 1200‹ C., the carbon black being recovered by passing the flue gases from the bed through a recovery system comprising a cyclone separator to remove char, a water scrubber, and an electrostatic precipitator or a bag filter. Preferably the raw coal used has an ash content of 2À5% by wt. or less, a vitrain content such that at least 80% by wt. of the coal floats over a liquid having a specific gravity of 1À30 and a volatile content of 35% or more.
