Abstract

Coke briquettes for use as fuel and/or as a reducing agent (esp. for metallurgical purposes) are produced from wood charcoal by (a) adding a coking coal, a silicate binder and a carbonaceous binder to charcoal fines; (b) briquetting the mixt.; and (c) carbonising the briquettes in a reducing atmosphere at a temp. sufficient to restore the volatiles content to a value suitable for metallurgical applications. The carbonaceous binder is pref. a mixt. of coal-tar pitch and coal tar obtd. by condensing the off-gases from carbonisation step (c); in some cases, a petroleum-based binder, e.g. bitumen, anthracenic oil or asphalt, can be used.
