Coking and carbonizing processes.-Carbonaceous materials are subjected in a continuous manner first to a low temperature distillation 185‹ to 580‹ C.) to drive off the oils at the temperature at which they volatlize and then to a high temperature distillation (580‹ C. to 1200‹ C.) to drive off the permanent gases, an inert gas such as producer gas, superheated if necessary, being passed into contact with and in counter-curent to the material, the distillations taking place either in a single retort or in two retorts in communication. The heating gas may be admitted at different points along the retort or retorts. The volatiles in the coke are reduced to 1 to 4 per per cent and an easily ignitable coke is obtained which is friable and suitable after crushing for use as a powdered fuel.
